Around Armidale

 From the camera's eye - Armidale N.S.W

Hi and thank you for visiting my blog.

My partner and I moved to Armidale in 2017 after many years in Adelaide. We have been passing through Armidale over the years en route to Grafton to visit my partner's family. We have always been impressed with the look and feel of Armidale as a small scenic city. When my partner's workplace closed down in Adelaide she managed to secure a job here in Armidale. And so, we made the move.

Because of my health, I have basically retired and my place in life is to support my partner and basically become a house husband. This gives me ample time to get out each day when I can and take my cameras to capture the sights and scenes around this lovely city.

I have a small collection of cameras and lenses, mainly Nikon DSLRs and a P900 Coolpix. We travel around the area often and both enjoy taking photos of the wildlife and scenery in our travels.

I hope you find the photos interesting.

AROUND OUR HOME

I'll start with the birds that visit our home. We have a large collection of birds around our property. They include Magpies, Murray Magpies, Currawongs, Parrots, small birds, Doves, Pigeons, and other visitors. I have built and installed bird feeder platforms for our feathered friends and stock them daily with seed, fruit, bread/honey, and other delicacies.

AROUND ARMIDALE

The city has the Dumaresq Creek running through the center from west to east. The entire strip of the creekbed has been developed as parkland, playing fields, and a cycleway. I make good use of the cycleway each day on my $20 dump shop bike, riding the entire length from east to west, out to the University of New England.

At certain times of the year, there may be Flying Foxes roosting and there are always waterbirds and wood ducks plying the waters.
Out to the west the creek reserve holds kangaroos as well as sheep and cattle.

There are currently a dozen kangaroos near the university each day, but they magically disappear when
the stock is in the area.

Black Cockatoos are sometimes present during spring. They mainly congregate out at the 'Pinery'
to the north of town.

The common Galahs are in good numbers all year round.

I haven't got a description of this bird yet.

I see this chap each day in the creek taking in the morning sun.

Pheasant Coucal - Pretty rare to see this one. He loves strawberries.

ARMIDALE - THE CITY

Armidale has some beautiful heritage buildings, predominately churches. The mall is quiet and peaceful most of the time. It's an easy walk from home to the city center and the coffee shops and cafes are numerous all along the mall. Sadly, we have recently lost some of our stores, with a couple set to shut soon. They include IGA, Target, Big W. That leaves Kmart, Coles, and Woolworths.  A trip to Tamworth will be in order to get anything out of the ordinary. The best part is the green parks, fields and reserves, as well as the proximity of waterfalls, dams and parks. Good food for the soul.

OUT OF TOWN

There are many sights to visit in the New England area near Armidale. From Glen Innes in the North to Uralla in the South. Out east, we have Dorrigo, Ebor, and Bellingen. There are Gorges, Parks & waterfalls to explore, plus interesting historical sites to visit.

The Gostwych Chapel is located on the back road between Uralla and Armidale.
